The Roßgumpenalm lies at 1330 m in the Höhenbach Valley, a side valley of the upper Lechtal. The alpine pasture in the middle of the Allgäu Alps is best reached from Holzgau. Roßgumpenalm hut lies on the well-known E5 long-distance hiking trail, which is why many hikers can be found in the Höhenbach valley. The hike to the alpine hut starts in the center of Holzgau at Gasthof Bären inn. You can reach the starting point in Holzgau easily by bus or car. There are also some free parking spaces at the starting point in Holzgau. From the start, the trail heads north into the Höhenbach Valley. A few hundred meters after the start, one crosses under the new pedestrian suspension bridge, which spans the Höhenbachtal in over 100 m. After about 30 minutes you reach the Simms waterfall, which can be heard from afar. The waterfall was artificially constructed in the 19th century by the English industrialist Frederic Simms. The trail leads along a narrow rock road on the right side of the valley next to the Simms waterfall. A few meters above the Simms waterfall is Café Uta, a snack station. From the beginning of June/end of May the Cafè Uta is open daily except Wednesdays. From Café Uta, the trail runs only slightly uphill through the natural Höhenbach valley. Shortly before the Roßgumpenalm there is a waterfall worth seeing, which is only a few meters away from the hiking trail. The Roßgumpenalm is open daily from the end of May to mid-October, Thursday is a day of rest. A leisurely hike from Holzgau to the alp takes 1.5 hours. Alternatively, the route from Holzgau to Café Uta can also be covered via the new pedestrian suspension bridge and the Mühlwald forest path. However, the section runs through the Mühlwald forest along a narrow and steep path.
